Suite: Judy Blue Eyes at Cat's Cradle

We had a fantastic time at the Carrboro Music Festival this year! If you've never been then you ought to add this event to your calendar next year. Thousands of people converge on the town where 26 stages are set up and selected bands perform their various styles of music. It's an amazing musical showcase, it's an all-volunteer effort...and it's free! Graymatter received an invitation to perform again this year and this time we were booked at the legendary Cat's Cradle up on the main stage. The venue was packed, the lighting and sound crews were awesome and we sang our hearts out to an amazing, appreciative audience.  Here's a link to Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, taken from the audience on an i-phone so you can get a small taste of our spot. The roar of the crowd when we finished up our set...unforgettable.

ALSapalooza

On Saturday, Oct. 7, Grove Winery and Vineyards will host the ALSapalooza Music Festival. The event features live music by Graymatter, Lemon Sparks, and the Sam Frazier Band.
“The ALSapalooza Music Festival is put together to raise ALS awareness and funds for The ALS Association - North Carolina Chapter,” said Mary Luper, an ALS patient who organized the event. “It includes three live bands, a corn hole tournament, food trucks, wine and beer, as well as vendor booths with handmade crafts. It is also kid and dog (leashed) friendly. Join us for the best party of the year!” The cost of admission is a suggested $10 minimum donation.
ALS, often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The disease robs people of the ability to walk, talk, eat, and eventually breathe. It traps them inside a body they no longer can control. ALS is a disease that is 100% fatal and usually strikes people between the ages of 40 and 70. Approximately 20,000 Americans can have the disease at any given time.

Money raised at ALSapalooza will benefit The ALS Association North Carolina Chapter, which focuses on finding cures and treatments for the disease through global research and advocacy as well as helping people living with ALS in North Carolina and their families. The North Carolina Chapter serves nearly 800 people living with ALS in North Carolina each year by supporting all of the state’s multidisciplinary ALS clinics, providing financial assistance to people living with ALS and operating support groups and a medical equipment loan program.

Graymatter is proud to be participating in this event and will be playing in honor of Dave’s aunt, Jane Jansen, who had ALS and passed away in 2014.
This will be a really fun evening so come on out and help us raise some funds for this great cause! Gates open at 5pm and the music kicks off at 6pm.
Grove Winery and Vineyards is in Gibsonville, just north of Greensboro. To get directions and learn more, visit www.grovewinery.com.

Burlington Times News

Close-knit chemistry
By Times News
7/27/17

GrayMatter has a passion for re-creating songs popular during the musicians’ youth.

“A GrayMatter show is chock-full of memories for people who grew up in the ’60s, ’70s and beyond, and we love introducing those dynamic classics in a fresh, new way to younger audiences who have never heard the songs before. Our originals are folk/rock/Americana-style pieces woven together with those same dynamic harmonies and often steeped in personal storytelling,” said Bev Gray Gude, who performs with her brothers, Brad and Barry Gray, and her husband, Dave Gude.

The band will make its third appearance at the Fourth Fridays/Musical Chairs concert series from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Historic Depot, 200 S. Main St., Burlington. Admission is free, but donations of children’s art supplies for classes at Alamance Arts are appreciated.

“We grew up singing and playing music together. We’d often gather our instruments and play music around the dining room table after dinner had ended, along with our two other siblings and our dad, Bryan, who also sang and played guitar,” Bev Gray Gude said.

Bev and Dave started dating at ages 15 and 16, respectively.

“Dave was there early on for those Gray musical moments,” she added.

Bev Gray Gude is featured on vocals, 12-string and high-strung acoustic guitars, bodhran, percussion and flute; Brad Gray is on vocals, acoustic and electric guitars; Barry Gray is on vocals and acoustic guitar; and Dave Gude is on vocals, acoustic guitar, tenor banjo, harmonica and mandolin.

Harmonies set this band apart from others in the Piedmont-Triad.

“There’s something special that happens when family voices are blended together — a close-knit chemistry that’s unique,” Bev Gray Gude said.

Inspiration comes from the bands with heavy-laden harmonies and fabulous rock bands, too.

“To name just a few of our favorites we’d have to say Peter, Paul & Mary; Kingston Trio; Beatles; James Taylor; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; The Monkees; Bob Dylan; Simon and Garfunkel; and The Band,” she said.

In addition to Friday’s concert, GrayMatter has a show at Listen Speakeasy at Hush in Greensboro on Monday.

“In this intimate setting, we’re going to be showcasing our original songs, so this is a unique opportunity for GrayMatter fans and for folks that enjoy singer-songwriter shows,” she said. The event will begin at 3 p.m. and seating is limited so those interested should go to the website at www.graymatternc.com.

Next up at Musical Chairs: Liverpool, Aug. 4 in downtown Elon as part of the Alive After Five portion of the concert series.

Personal Soundtracks

When I stop to take notice, I find a song is there, running through my head - always.  My head is full of music and when I asked my bandmates about this they admitted that they too have their own personal soundtracks in play. So, Quick! What song do you have running through your head right now?

We're always looking for new additions to our already deep setlists. Do you have a favorite song from the 60's or 70's that you'd like to hear at one of our shows? Shoot us an e-mail at graymatternc@gmail.com and let us know!
